Mindstage for kids

acting for young storytellers

One camera and a small crew of most excellent actors. How many different ways of telling a story can you find?

This is one of the questions we challenge our young acting students to provide an answer to by having them create short films, live-video feeds, vines, gifs and maybe even web-series, right alongside putting on (almost) classical theatre shows.

The point is to blend our young artists’ native knack for recording everything they see with our own, more classically trained storytelling skills.

And the result is an acting class dedicated to developing a new kind of literacy – that of visual storytelling for young audiences.

Acting Modules

Modulul I

Intro to acting

This module is essential for everything that follows. Through theatre games and improvisational theatre we develop the actor’s basic ability for being present in the moment, i.e.: attentive, spontaneous, receptive and above all, a team-player. As an ending for this module, we invite our young actor’s parents and friends to enjoy a short (no longer than 30mins) reader’s theatre piece.

How it works

Number of classes: 10 (2 1/2 months)
Length of each class: 2h
Classes meet: once a week

*** A minimum of 10 participants is required in order for the module to take place.

Modulul II

Story to stage *

The second module continues our work in the introductive classes. Still starting from games and improvisation exercises, we explore the story in more depth, we decypher character motivations and make aesthetic choices about the way they should be represented on stage. Also during this stage, we encourage our young actors to create original video footage on the side – either documenting their process or enhancing the narrative through creative storytelling. At the end of Module II, we invite our friends and families back to see our completed work of theatre.

Details:

Number of classes: 14 (3 months)
Length of each class: 2h
Classes meet: once a week

* In order to enroll in the second Module, the student should have completed the Ist Module, at least once, or else demonstrate knowledge of its content (previous acting classes might suffice).  Afterwards, the second Module may be repeated as many times as the student wishes, as the show changes with each new group.

*** A minimum of 10 participants is required in order for the module to take place.
